The person who runs Vancouver Drywall Guys spent around 15 years finishing drywall across the Lower Mainland before starting the company in 2024. Houses on the west side with lath and plaster behind the walls. Vancouver Specials in East Van with stipple on every ceiling. Tower suites downtown where the board arrives in a freight elevator booked two days earlier.
That background is the reason the phone gets answered by someone who can tell you whether your problem is a two-hour patch or a three-day job, and price it on the spot rather than booking an appointment to find out. It is also why the quotes name a finish level. Someone who has sanded a ceiling under pot lights knows exactly which rooms need Level 5 and which rooms are being sold it.
The company is young. The trade experience behind it is not, and we would rather say that plainly than dress up 2024 as decades of heritage. What you get is a small operation where the person quoting the job is the person accountable for it.

Straight answers
What licensed and insured actually means in British Columbia
Nearly every drywall company in this city advertises those two words, so they have stopped meaning anything. Here is what is real, what is not, and the three documents worth asking for.

Ask us for these before you book. Then ask everyone else who quotes you for theirs, because the answer you get is informative either way.

A municipal business licence
That the business is registered to operate.
The City of Vancouver issues these and you can look one up yourself through the City's business licence search. It confirms registration. It says nothing about skill, so do not treat it as a quality signal.

A WorkSafeBC clearance letter
That hiring them will not leave you holding their unpaid premiums.
This is the one that actually protects your money and almost nobody asks for it. If you hire a contractor who is behind on their WorkSafeBC premiums, you can be held liable for those premiums for work done on your property. The letter has to be addressed to you and confirm good standing for your whole contract period. Anyone can request one from WorkSafeBC free of charge.

A certificate of insurance
That there is coverage if something goes wrong in your home.
Ask for it to come from the broker rather than forwarded to you by the contractor, and check the policy dates cover your job. A screenshot of an old certificate is not evidence of anything.
The WorkSafeBC clearance letter is the one to insist on. Most homeowners have never heard of it, and it is the only document in this list that protects your money rather than confirming paperwork exists.
How we operate
Five things we do differently, and why
None of these are difficult. They are just uncommon, which is most of what there is to say about the state of this trade.

We price the job, not the hour
Every quote is a fixed number in writing with the finish level named and disposal included. Hourly billing moves the risk of a slow day onto you, and in a trade where each coat has to dry before the next one goes on, it creates an incentive nobody should want. If something genuinely unexpected turns up behind a wall, we stop and price it before continuing.

We tell you when not to spend money
Most quotes we hand over include at least one thing we have talked the client out of. A Level 5 skim in a room with flat paint and ordinary windows. Sound treatment on four walls when the noise comes from one. Removing every textured ceiling in the house at once instead of the two that bother you. It costs us revenue on the day and it is the reason people call us back.

We say no to work that is not ours
No asbestos testing, no mould remediation, no structural framing, no spray foam, no finish painting. Each of those is somebody else's trade and doing it badly would be worse than not doing it. When a job needs one of them we say so and point you in the right direction, even when that means losing the whole project.

We ask about permits before we quote
Drywall repairs to fire separations in multi-unit buildings need a City of Vancouver building permit. So does finishing a basement, once framing or insulation is involved. And on permitted work nothing gets boarded until the framing and vapour barrier inspections pass. We raise all of this at the quote stage, because finding out from an inspector standing in a finished room is expensive.

We prime, and we clean up
Bare joint compound drinks paint differently to the surface around it, which is why an unprimed repair can look perfect until the moment it is painted. We prime what we finish. Then the debris leaves with us, to a facility that accepts commercial gypsum, because gypsum is banned from the garbage across Metro Vancouver and the residential drop-off program excludes contractors.

The standards and rules that govern this work
Worth knowing about even if you never hire us, because they are the things a quote should be able to reference and most cannot.
- GA-214
- The Gypsum Association standard defining drywall finish Levels 0 through 5. It is what "Level 4" and "Level 5" actually mean, and we name the level on every quote so you are comparing like with like.
- Vancouver Building By-law
- Vancouver runs its own by-law rather than the provincial building code, which catches out contractors who quote provincial numbers here. Required insulation values and fire separation ratings come from your permit drawings, and we build to what is specified rather than to a table we half remember.
- WorkSafeBC OHSR
- The rules requiring a qualified person to identify hazardous materials before renovation work disturbs them. There is no building-age exemption in that duty, and in BC even taking a sample is licensed abatement work, which is why we will never offer to test a ceiling.
- Metro Vancouver disposal rules
- Gypsum is banned from the regional garbage stream and the residential drop-off program specifically excludes contractors. Old board goes to a facility that accepts commercial gypsum, and that cost is inside our quoted price rather than added afterwards.
After the job
How our warranty works
Every job carries a workmanship warranty, and the term for your job is written into the quote before we start. It is agreed rather than assumed, and it is specific to the scope, because a patch in a hallway and a whole basement are not the same promise.
We would rather do that than advertise a single headline number that quietly excludes half of what we do. If a seam we taped lets go, call us. What a workmanship warranty does not cover is new movement in the building, a leak nobody knew about, or damage after we left, and we will be straight with you about which one you have.

Vancouver first, then the near suburbs
Vancouver is home and it is where most of our work is, from Kitsilano and Dunbar through Mount Pleasant and East Van to the towers downtown. We also take jobs in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond.
There is no street address on this site because we are a service-area business and work out of vans rather than a showroom. If you are just outside the areas listed, call and ask. The answer depends on the size of the job more than the postcode.
